Festinice children’s matinees offer children and their parents a possibility to spend quality time with music, develop their imagination, find out about new concepts, have their thought processes stimulated and develop principles of aesthetics and ethics, they encourage creativity, and moreover makecultural content suitable and accessible for the youngest audience, while promoting general cultural development. Festinice, a musical cycle in Ljubljana, educates children and offers them a direction towards music. Throughout the successful years of the cycle, we have attracted regular visitors who came for our concerts even from other parts of Slovenia.

Our programs are exceptional because of the thoughtful design that draws children towards music through the communication with performers. The concerts are intentionally adapted so that the contact between creators and listeners is uninterrupted. We explicitly deal with the youngest audience, who is offered the same classical music as we perform for adult listeners. Most often we present a program that we performed at evening concerts in the Festine concert cycle.

Children listen to music from different periods, from Baroque to newly-written music. In this way they learn about instruments, composers, musicians, conductors and peers who are engaged in music. We simply introduce them the world of rhythm, melodies and with easy didactic methods we refer to the process of conscious listening to music, in a very simple way we teach them the basics of the theory of music.

The script and a professional but relaxed commentary are led by a commentator with the help of the leader of the performing ensemble. Young listeners who are able to ask questions are actively involved; children may express themselves loudly about the heard and seen and offer suggestions to the musicians. The commentator and the leader of the ensemble or the soloist are always ready for possible turns in the course of concerts (depending on the reactions of the children), so that children experience their own imaginative course of the performance.

The listeners’ participation is much welcome – since that enables the closest contact with the artists – even encouraged, therefore our scripts always include parts where listeners actively participate. They are thus placed in the role of the performer, they can try to play different instruments, to live in the role of conductor, observe him from all sides, as well as musicians; all that to raise enthusiasm for music, performing music and listening. The length of the program is adapted to the children’s ability to focus.

All musicians participating in the Festine concert cycle also perform in the Festinice concert cycle. For us organizers, the understanding of the audience of different generations has always been crucial. The active cooperation of performers with the listeners is extremely important.

Participants: Slovene musicians, symphony orchestras of music schools, brass band orchestras of music schools, internationally renowned soloists, commentator, conductor and scriptwriter Živa Ploj Peršuh, guest commentator Tilen Artač and CHILDREN from the audience.
