Last March, shortly after the start of the war in Ukraine, the Slovenian Youth Orchestra responded to an appeal from the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine and, through joint cooperation and with the help of Slovenian institutions, brought young musicians and their relatives to Slovenia. Their story has been captured in the documentary film Music for the Future by RTV Slovenia. The film was written by Monika Rijavec and directed by Dušan Moravec from Idrija.
As the screenwriter said after the preview screening at Kinodvor, this was one of the most beautiful but also one of the most difficult projects she has worked on so far, especially because of the awareness of how quickly things can change. At the same time, she expressed her satisfaction at having been able to document the operation through which her protagonists Živa Ploj Peršuh and Tomo Peršuh, the driving forces behind the Music for the Future project, offered young musicians hope and, given the war in their home country, enabled them to lead as normal a life as possible in Slovenia. As Moravec added, the idea from the very beginning was for the film to be accompanied by as much music as possible. Set to music, the film thus shows how the young Ukrainian musicians were still working in their country in autumn 2021, and how in February of the following year they were faced with a different reality. In March 2022, also with the help of diplomacy, 95 young people were brought to Slovenia; following an appeal for help to which Slovenian musicians responded, they were able to continue their schooling and also learn Slovenian. In the film, the young people share their impressions of what happened and also what music means to them. As the film also shows, 97 young people ultimately remained in Slovenia with their close relatives and are being educated here. Živa Ploj Peršuh described the film as an embrace of what happened during the operation, while also emphasising that the mission of the national broadcaster is to spread such human stories.
