The Kranjčan family and the Slovenian Youth Orchestra with conductor Živa Ploj Peršuh at the Ljubljana Festival

Performing today on the stage of Ljubljana's Križanke will be The Slovenian Youth Orchestra under the baton of Živa Ploj Peršuh. As part of the Ljubljana Festival, the ensemble of young musicians will present the music of the artistic Kranjčan family, and will also perform excerpts from Holst's suite The Planets and Danzón No. 2 by the Mexican composer Arturo Márquez.

The Slovenian Youth Orchestra under the artistic direction of its founder and conductor Živa Ploj Peršuh has been bringing together aspiring young musicians aged between 12 and 22 since 2019. Among their most notable performances was their participation in the international orchestral marathon of national youth orchestras from around the world. It was also one of the 14 orchestras that performed at the climate conference in Glasgow, where they played Antonio Vivaldi's Four Seasons, algorithmically altered.

The orchestra has become a full member of the European Federation of National Youth Orchestras (EFNYO), which is a great recognition of their work and achievements to date. EFNYO with its 36 members, provides a platform for the exchange of expertise and experience in music training, music performance, audience engagement, international mobility and intercultural dialogue among the leading national and international youth orchestras in Europe, the orchestra said.

“This year we will be preparing a programme with the Krajnčan family, steeped in music and art. Besides the fact that the parents, Lojze and Romana, are respected musicians who have been helping to shape the Slovenian music scene for decades, it is extremely inspiring to follow the paths of their sons Kristijan and Žigan”, said Živa Ploj Peršuh.

The common thread of the Kranjčan family's performance is Lojze Kranjčan, the author of all the arrangements. Romana will perform four songs, including the “almost folk song” Huda mravljica. The elder son Kristijan, a cellist and drummer, will play, among other things, Lojze's arrangement of the Slovenian folk song Zeleni Jurij. The Kranjčan family's performance will be rounded off by dancer and vocalist Žigan with his brother Kristijan in an arrangement of Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G major, in which they will combine jazz and classical music.
