Melodies from popular animated films
The Slovenian Youth Orchestra, which under the direction of the acclaimed conductor Živa Ploj Peršuh has for several years in a row brought fresh programming and youthful energy to the Ljubljana Festival, will present on Wednesday 21 August at 20.30 at the Križanke Summer Theatre a selection of film music comprising both classical and popular pieces from the most popular animated and live-action films and franchises.
Živa Ploj Peršuh is an outstanding Slovenian conductor who in 2019 founded the Slovenian Youth Orchestra, which quickly became a symbol of Slovenian culture and part of the European Federation of National Youth Orchestras.
The conductor is renowned for her dedication to young musicians and frequently works with leading Slovenian orchestras. Her passion for working with young people and her internationally acclaimed conducting have earned her a strong reputation in Slovenia and abroad.
The Slovenian Youth Orchestra is made up of the most promising Slovenian musicians aged 16 to 26, who come from Slovenia and abroad, where they study and work.
The orchestra is known for its first-rate performances of classical music, as well as for taking part in projects across a range of genres, in which classical music is combined with other musical styles. The event will be presented by Marcel Štefančič, the acclaimed Slovenian television presenter, writer and author of more than a hundred books, known for his extensive knowledge of film, literature, music and socio-political issues.
At the concert, the ensemble will take the audience through unforgettable works that have left their mark on film history.
They will perform a selection of pieces including the heart-rending Intermezzo from Pietro Mascagni's opera Cavalleria Rusticana, made famous by The Godfather trilogy, and the Waltz of the Flowers from Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker, which has inspired many film-makers.
The programme will also be enriched by contemporary works such as Lauri Porra's Entropia, and by Slovenian film hits that have made an important contribution to Slovenia's film and musical heritage. In this way the ensemble will create a magical sonic journey through different film genres and eras.
