Ljubljana Festival will be the concert Zappa Day in Ljubljana, in which the ensemble will pay tribute to the acclaimed musician Frank Zappa. A day later, on Tuesday 20 August, ballet lovers will be able to see the finest excerpts of classical and contemporary ballet at the Gala Evening of World Ballet Stars. On Wednesday 21 August we will enjoy popular film music performed by the Slovenian Youth Orchestra under the direction of conductor Živa Ploj Peršuh, with soloist Lauri Porra on electric bass guitar. We will round off this varied week on Friday 23 August with a concert by Oto Pestner and his ladies. The beginning of the following week will be marked by a high-profile concert presenting pieces from the new album by Bossa de Novo in collaboration with the pianist César Camargo Mariano.

A SUMMER EVENING WITH MELODIES OF FILM CLASSICS (Wednesday, 21. 8. 2024, at 20. 30, Križanke Summer Theatre)
On Wednesday 21 August at 20.30, the Križanke Summer Theatre will host an exceptional concert at which the Slovenian Youth Orchestra, under the direction of the distinguished conductor Živa Ploj Peršuh, will present a selection of film music. The ensemble, which has been bringing freshness and youthful energy to the Ljubljana Festival for several years, will perform a programme comprising both classical and popular pieces from favourite animated and live-action films and franchises. The exceptional conductor is renowned for her dedication to young musicians and frequently works with leading Slovenian orchestras, which has earned her international recognition and esteem. She founded the Slovenian Youth Orchestra, which quickly established itself as a symbol of Slovenian culture and a member of the European Federation of National Youth Orchestras, in 2019. It is made up of the most promising musicians aged 16 to 26, who come from various educational backgrounds in Slovenia and abroad. In addition to first-rate performances of classical music, the orchestra is also known for taking part in diverse projects in which classical music is combined with other musical genres. They will be joined on stage by the acclaimed electric bass soloist Lauri Porra, who skilfully interweaves classical and rock music. He has extensive experience in various musical fields and a successful history of international collaborations behind him. The event will be presented by Marcel Štefančič, the acclaimed Slovenian television presenter and writer, known for his extensive knowledge of film, literature, music and socio-political issues.
The concert will feature works that have helped shape film history. Among the pieces will be the heart-rending Intermezzo from Pietro Mascagni's opera Kmečka čast (Cavalleria Rusticana), made famous in The Godfather trilogy, and the Waltz of the Flowers from Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker, which has influenced many film-makers. The programme will be enriched by contemporary works such as Lauri Porra's concerto Entropia, and by Slovenian film hits that have made an important contribution to Slovenia's musical and film heritage.
