A Slovenian conductor has attracted the attention of the British BBC because of a rescue operation.
Soon after the war in Ukraine began, an operation was launched to rescue the children of one of the country’s orchestras from the turmoil of war. The Slovenian conductor Živa Ploj Peršuh joined the operation. The story of the 140 people who found refuge in Slovenia has also been covered by the British BBC.
“The journey was hard. We couldn’t open the windows or turn on the lights on the train,” says 10-year-old Gleb, describing the journey. He took his recorder with him, but they had to leave most of their things at home, including their pets. The older members of the orchestra have formed a youth orchestra with which they hope to perform across Europe in the coming months. The younger musicians are rehearsing together for a performance for President Borut Pahor, reports the Žurnal24 portal.
Živa Ploj Peršuh told the BBC that they want the children to feel loved and valued. “They deserve it. They are young, bright and talented,” she stresses. She cannot imagine being in their situation herself. “I have a seven-year-old son. I can’t imagine having to get on a train with him, with a plastic bag in my hand, maybe a teddy bear, a phone, documents, and that’s it.” The children are determined to be Ukraine’s musical ambassadors until they can return home, Žurnal24 reports.
