Hanne Slak's new feature film is competing for the Platform Award at the Toronto Film Festival.

Hanne Slak's feature film Not a Word made its world premiere yesterday at the 48th Toronto International Film Festival, which will screen around 200 films until 17 September. It is in competition for the Platform Award of 20,000 Canadian dollars.

An intimate drama, Threads of a Word is a German-Slovenian-French co-production about the interdependence of professional and family life. Maren Eggert, known from Marie Schrader's The Real Man, plays the star conductor Nina, and Marko Mandić plays one of the main roles. While Nina is preparing for an important concert of Mahler's Fifth Symphony, her son Lars ( Jona Levin Nicolai ) is involved in a strange accident. After Nina stops rehearsals, the two find themselves in isolation and (unsuccessfully) search for a way to communicate with each other.

"In the film, music and sound play a very important role, which is why it was crucial to have the Slovenian conductor Živa Ploj Peršuh and the superb sound recordist Grega Švabič. We filmed in the winter on the stormy French Atlantic coast, and Grega mastered the task, as did the exceptional Aleš Belak, a Slovenian stedikema operator used to extreme challenges," said Hanna Slak about the Slovenian contribution to the film. She added that she has been working with Marko Mandić since her student days, while the make-up artist Tina Lasič Andrejevič has excelled in her work with Maren Eggert. "The Slovenian part of the team has done a superb job, as well as the producer Miha Černec with his unstoppable energy." In this part of the team, they were joined by producer Jožko Rutar, film directors Petra Trampuž and Mihaela Trupi, first assistant director Urška Kos and photographer Mitja Ličen.
